Weekend Highlights Aug 23-24

Did you come down for Friday Nights in the Village?  If not, well you missed out on some good old fashioned fun.  My band – Full Flight – played at The Copper Q.

The staff there is terrific and the coffee is better than Starbucks!  We got set up around 4:30 and there were people eagerly waiting for us to start.   We played from 5 pm until 8 pm.  We all had a blast, playing music while little kids danced with their parents.  I noticed that some people were enjoying ice cream from North Pole Fudge and Ice Cream across the street, its too bad that you can’t eat ice cream while playing the guitar – it looked very tasty.

On Saturday, there was the 31st Annual Wooden Boat Show at the Pine Knot Marina.  I stopped by to check out the boats for a bit.

The Flash Gordon BoatI called this one “Flash Gordons Boat” because it reminded me that old comic hero’s rocket ship.

1886 seam engine motorThis was an 1886 steam engine boat.  The hull had been reconstructed out of fiberglass in the 60’s.  It reminded me of the boat in the movie “African Queen” with Humphry Bogart and Katherine Hepburn

A couple of Packard’s stood at the entrance.  these are beautifully restored and are owned by a local here in Big Bear.PackardsOf course – with so many boats and so little space – I put the rest in a slideshow – enjoy!

Sunday – I needed to go off the mountain to get some DVD’s and printing ink.   On the way back – I went to Hanger 24 – the brewery in Redlands.

There are plenty of places up here on the mountain serving this delicious micro-brew and I did not know the actual brewery was so close.  The beer is really brewed right there!

I went there with the intention of speaking to management about Full Flight playing there – and of course had to order a “Flight” of their beers.

Rebecca and I enjoyed tasting 9 beers for only $8!  As were were only on a short mission, we did not stay long but we will to go back again, hopefully for a gig.

Locally, Le Dolce Vita Tasting Room serves a large selection of Hanger 24 in bottles and Murrays usually has the Orange Wheat on tap.

Big Bear Weekend Highlights – Aug 16-17

This past weekend I was invited out on a pontoon boat.  In case you are not familiar with this – a pontoon boat is a great way to spend time on the lake with a few friends. Everybody on the lake                                                                    They are not to expensive to rent, require basic driving skill to operate and have plenty of room for coolers of food.  Think of it as a picnic on the lake.

For our picnic we packed up cold chicken, chips, dip, beer, soda, water, crackers and cheese.  Be sure to bring plenty of napkins or paper towels and trash bags too.  We went out for a 3 hour trip – which is enough time to wander around the lake at least twice.   I brought my guitar along so we could sing some songs out on the lake.

We pulled in close to The Lakeside Boathouse Tavern – where Randy and Terry (Ukulele High) were playing on the beach.  You can listen to Ukulele High most summer weekends 12-4pm

Our wonderful weather will be changing to chilly soon enough – so get out on the lake while it is still warm!

I know this post is short, but I was having so much fun I forgot to take pictures!  There have been so many events this summer – this is all I did this last weekend.  Sometimes it is just great to do practically nothing.  This next weekend we have a wooden boat show down at Pine Knot Marina, with classic cars too.

Weekend Update – Aug 15

What is going on this weekend in Big Bear?

During the summer, every Friday the weekend kicks off with “Friday Nights in the Village”.  From 5pm-8pm musicians and art performers are “hanging out” to entertain you. What I like about this is – Friday Nights in the Village promotes a family friendly environment, gives exposure to our local artists in a public way and promotes our local businesses.  Come on down – take a stroll and enjoy The Village.

Art on the LakeNext up is Big Bear Lake’s 15th Annual Art on The Lake.  Happening both Saturday and Sunday – from 10 am – 5 pm.  Artists from around the region will be showing their work. There is a beer and wine garden, food vendors and live music. It is at the Bartlett Events area in The Village of Big Bear Lake.   Once again – this is free to enjoy for all.

This is also the last weekend of the 13th Annual Big Bear Renaissance Faire, so if you want to go, its your last chance!  There will be jousting tournaments, a pirate fortress, a fairy garden with fairies flying in the trees and more.  Learn skills and trades of the time with classes and demonstrations.  Mid-evil era food and drink will include Dragon’s Blood and Unicorn’s Breath (red or white wine), ales and meads, full vegetarian selection, pastries, turkey legs, chicken, ribs and more.  5 stages of varied entertainment, full costumed vendors, artisans, royalty and more all abound in our “dark forests”.  Don’t forget to visit the Queen – all children who visit the her majesty get a free gift!

All proceeds go to educational funds, scholarships  and the continuation of the event.

Big Bear Weekend Update – Aug 1

Well, all my dear readers, I have been out of town this past week.  But for those of you who are continuing to support my endeavors here, thank you.   I will jump right into what is going on.

The Big Bear Cycling Festival wraps up this weekend, with the highlight being the Tour de Big Bear ride.  There is also a Poker Ride, Cycling Expo and a Road Bicycle Concours contest.  All of this is going on Friday at the Nottinghams/Robin Hood Resort parking lot noon till 9 pm.  Saturday, the expo moves to the Christmas tree lot in the village.  If you like bicycles, come on down!

Friday Nights in The Village will be from 5-8pm with street musicians, arts and crafts and more.

Tonight, Kenny Marquez is playing at Le Dolce Vita Tasting Room.  Listen his sweet guitar stylings while enjoying good company.

Tomorrow night my friend Duke Michaels and his band will be at The Cave in the Village.  Duke Michaels is one of the opening bands before the 80’s band “The Tubes” takes the stage.

Yours truly will be doing my usual Friday night gig with Beyond Karaoke at The Boathouse Lakeside Tavern.  If you want to sing, come down and belt out a few.

Of course, if none of this interests you, there is always the lake.  It is really warm, so why not take the kids down to Swim Beach?  I took another look around Meadow Park and realized I did not know half of what is there.  Baseball fields, TBall field, BBQ’s, Picnic Tables, Tennis Courts, Basketball court, playground and Bark Park for Dogs.  That will be the next park highlights, but for now I gotta go interview one of the cyclists.

Big Bear Weekend Update – July 25

What to do this weekend?   It will be not too hot and not too cool.  There may be chances of scattered thunderstorms Saturday and Sunday – so staying close to cover might me a good idea.

The Village Gateway on Pine Knot

How about starting off Friday night with Friday Nights in The Village?  A nice stroll down Pine Knot listening to street musicians enjoying a tasty treat, checking out local arts and crafts.  Friday Nights in The Village are from 5 pm till 8 pm.

While you are at The Village, what about a movie?
Disney’s Planes: Fire and Rescue – Family Animated
Dawn of the Planet of the Apes – Another new take on the cult classic
Hercules – Action and Adventure
Lucy – Sci-Fi
I will let my readers know now, I have seen none of these movies yet, we are just sharing what there is.

There is always a lot of music going on here in Big Bear – use our Big Bear Times Event Calender and to figure out who and where.
Personal recommendation: Check out Brad Riesau of Silver Moon at Barnstorm Cafe Saturday evening between 5 and 8 pm while grabbing a bite.  Tell Brad you saw this in The Big Bear Times.

Another event going on this week is the Big Bear Cycling Festival.   There is rides and events going on all week long starting  Saturday, July 26.  For the advanced – there is the first annual Big Bear MTB (Mountain Bike) Gran Fondo (Gran Tour) featuring several lengths throughout the San Bernardino National Forest.  Check in is at Nottinghams Tavern Friday July 25.
For the intermediate – Meet up at the Copper Q and go for the 20 mile or challenge yourself with the 40 mile ride.
For those that want to do a ride, but are looking for a more family cruise, there is the Wellness Ride at 9 am Saturday morning starting from the Bear Valley Community Hospital.  That sounds like more my speed, as I have not cycled avidly since, well a long time ago, lets just leave it at that.
Special thanks to reader Joe Dittmore who informed me a couple weeks ago that I was missing this event.  This is what a community blog is all about.

For those of you that are animal lovers, there is Dog Dayzzz Captain John’s Fawn Harbor Marina! All day Saturday, July 26th so come on down and be prepared to take home a new friend.  There are pet clinics, vendors, $3 hot dogs and contests too!
Thank you Stephanie Whyte for informing me about this event

I will be out of town this weekend, so readers – please comment with pictures of any events.
